GO BEYOND STEREO AT RADA WITH TIMAX AND MARTIN AUDIO
TiMax and Martin Audio have announced a half-day industry event, called Beyond Stereo: Spatial Mixing for Theatre Professionals. Hosted at RADA's JVT Theatre (Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre) on 26th May 2026, the session is free to attend and all theatre professionals are welcome to register.
The event acknowledges that although spatial effects are used widely in theatre, most theatre sound professionals are still working in stereo because that is the reality of most loudspeaker deployments. From this working premise, Beyond Stereo aims to demonstrate, in a working theatre environment, what lies beyond.
Spatial audio expert, Phil Wright leads a session that takes attendees through the familiar structure of a three-act journey.
Act one opens with a live demonstration of stereo-only mixing. The familiar constraints of limited localisation, the realities of level-based panning and a narrow sweet spot are established through the sound system.
The second act introduces TiMax SoundHub into the same PA, demonstrating how object-based delay matrix processing shifts spatial imaging from level-based to time-based. This shift improves separation, adding genuine depth and significantly widening the sweet spot to every seat in the auditorium.
Act three delivers the climactic payoff, through RADA's full immersive deployment. The workflow principles do not change but the audio is expanded across surrounds, downfills, and overheads during an active student production.
Wright maintains, "I'm always delighted to evangelise the benefits of spatial audio in all its forms, and the opportunity to open up the possibilities and opportunities of TiMax alongside a Martin Audio loudspeaker deployment, to fellow sound professionals in a working theatre, is a real treat."
The venue is central to the proposition. RADA's JVT Theatre (Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre) runs a full TiMax SoundHub infrastructure alongside a Martin Audio loudspeaker system, making it one of the few spaces in the UK where this progression can be demonstrated in a genuine context rather than a purpose-built demo environment. The session takes place alongside a student musical production further demonstrating the real world environment.
The event, which includes lunch and arrival refreshments, is a focused, educational session designed for theatre sound designers, educators, assistants, and early-career professionals, looking for direct, practical insight into spatial audio workflow in a working theatre. Places are limited so book early
