LONGBOW ENDS FESTIVAL SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE
Martin Audio's W8L Longbow system shines at Creamfields, Jersey Live and Bestival
When Mark 'Knocker' Neil purchased 24 x Martin Audio W8L Longbows at the beginning of the summer - in anticipation of a vibrant festival season - he could little have anticipated just how busy his service company, Production Hire, would become.
The full line array system made its successful festival debut at RockNess Music Festival in Scotland back in June - but it has since received further outings at Creamfields in Cheshire, Jersey Live in the Channel Islands, and finally the sixth Bestival on the Isle of Wight. Neil now anticipates a further heavy tour of duty for the system, with several massive New Year's Eve parties in the offing.
All the events were promoted by Virtual Festivals - and at RockNess, Creamfields and Bestival / Camp Bestival Mark Neil was working through production company, Loud Sound Events.
'The system sounded stunning wherever we played,' said Neil. 'Longbow is great because it's so directional. These top boxes sound amazing and we've now done a lot of gigs with them. Every client has been over the moon - we have received a number of favourable comments, and not a single complaint.' The same went for the containment and noise pollution issues, where not a single complaint was received. In spite of high winds Production Hire conformed to all Vanguardia's propagation measurements at each of the sites.
At Creamfields in Halton, Cheshire, where headliners Basement Jaxx were supported by an all star cast including DJ Tiësto, Mylo and Dizzee Rascal, Production Hire fielded 12 x W8L Longbows per side with a single W8LCD downfill providing infill on either flank.
On stage DJ's and musicians received their reference sound through up to 14 of Martin Audio's classic LE700 floor wedges, while four stacks of Wavefront W8 provided the stage side fills.
'Although Creamfields is a regular gig for us we've never done the main stage before - and the Longbows really performed,' he said. Part of the site design included a delay position where six Martin Audio W8LC Compact line arrays and three WS218X subs per side provided even, widely-dispersed coverage, while keeping the sound contained.
For Jersey Live, at the Royal Jersey Showground, Basement Jaxx and Dizzee Rascal were again the main stage headliners (along with the Kooks) - and it was the first time Production Hire had been contracted to provide the sound.
'We've only ever handled the lighting in the past - but the Longbows really sparkled and everyone loved it.'
Production Hire rigged eight W8L's per side, with W8LCD Downfills infilling, and Wavefront 8's performing side fill duties onstage, alongside the 14 x LE700's.
Meanwhile, headlining alongside Massive Attack at Bestival were Elbow and Kraftwerk, where the directionality of the Longbow system again came into its own.
And so as the winter nights draw in and the production industry starts looking towards its end of year activities, Knocker Neil can reflect on a highly successful season - and a Martin Audio Longbow purchase which has already repaid the investment with interest.
'I think I bought Longbow at exactly the right time because it is now really coming on in leaps and bounds. All our people love it.'
